U7 Rules

  • Half ice 
  • Ice Time will be
  • 5 minute warm up
  • 2-24 minute periods
  • Whistle every 2 minutes running , face off to start every shift  
  • 2 minute break between periods
  • 5 minute clean up and shake hands

U9 Rules 

  • Half ice games, some ice slots will have 2 games going on at same time
  • 2 -24 minute periods
  • Horn every 2 minutes and change on the fly. The players on ice 
  • Line up along the boards and ideally players should wait until all their
  • teammates get to the boards excluding players learning the game before going for the puck
  • When a penalty is called player will be asked to go to bench for the entirety of the shift 
  • Home team wears darks if Possible, please communicate with other team about jerseys
  • Warm Up pucks will be on each bench for your 1/2 of ice, share with team on bench
  • Referees will blow whistle and then teams need to back up
  • 5 Minute Warm up
  • 2 Minute Intermission break
  • 5 Minute to clean up and shake hand
  • Last game of tournament will be medal presentation and team picture with

The Portage Cup

U11 and U13 

  • Hockey Canada Rules in place
  • Referee's decision is final 
  • No Protest
  • Home Team wears dark uniforms

Basic Tournament Rules and Point System 

POINT SYSTEM

  • 3 Point for Regulation win
  • 2 Points for an OT or Shootout Win
  • 1 Point for Shoot out Lose
  • Tie Breaker in Pools is 
    • A: Head to Head
    • B: Goals for divided by Total goals
    • C: Least amount of Penalties
    • D: Fasted Goal scored by your team
  • Mercy Rule: The clock will run after the first period if there is a 5 goal difference. The clock will go back to stop time if the score is less than a 5 goal difference.
  • Minor Penalties during run time and stop time will be 2 minutes. Clock may stop to enter information on the clock 
  • Mouthguards / Neckguards Are required if your Province or State requires them during your winter season. Saskatchewan, for example, does not require mouthguards.   
  • Rosters: Please come to the tournament office before your first game to verify your roster and spelling of names and jersey numbers.  
  • Periods: 3 x 15 Minute stop time periods  
  • Overtime: 3 PLAYER SHOOTOUT AND THEN SUDDEN DEATH SHOOT OUT 
  • Pucks: The Portage Cup does provide all warm up pucks.   
  • Penalty Boxes: The Portage Cup provides one timekeeper 
  • Majors: Subject to Hockey Manitoba decision on the penalty call. Players can expect a minimum of 1 game to 5 game suspension.  
  • Minor Penalties: 
    • 4 Minors - removed from the game with no further suspension 
    • 3 Stick infractions - removed from the game with no further suspension  
  • Player Warm Ups Please if your team is doing warm ups to do so outside Stride Arena or in designated areas, please ask prior to warming up in side about area

Championship Awards

  •  Awards will be presented on the ice
  • Teams will keep the Championship Banner and will be able to celebrate with Championship Stanley Cup for up to 20 minutes for pictures.
